Early Orthodontic Treatment for Children
Early orthodontic treatment (Phase One) focuses on guiding jaw growth and creating the right environment for permanent teeth to come in properly. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven. At this age, most kids have a mix of baby and adult teeth, allowing the orthodontist to identify developing bite or tooth alignment issues early.
Phase One treatment typically begins around ages seven or eight, while Phase Two usually starts around age 11 or older. Early treatment can:
- Guide proper jaw growth and alignment
- Correct bite problems, such as underbites or crossbites
- Create space for permanent teeth to erupt correctly
- Reduce the likelihood of extractions or surgery in the future.
Signs your child may benefit from early orthodontic intervention:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth (most children lose their first teeth around age 5 or 6 and finish by age 12 or 13)
- Difficulty chewing and/or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb or finger-sucking beyond age 5
- Speech impediments
- Protruding or flared teeth (teeth stick out)
- Teeth that don't come together properly
- Shifting of the jaw when your child opens or closes his or her mouth
- Crossbite
- Crowded front teeth around ages 7-8
What causes orthodontic problems, and how will early treatment benefit my child?
Orthodontic problems can be inherited or develop due to environmental factors such as early or late loss of baby teeth, thumb-sucking, mouth injury, or abnormal jaw growth. Since jawbones harden and stop growing by the end of the teen years, orthodontic treatment in adults can take longer and sometimes require extractions or surgery. Addressing problems early can help your child minimize the need for lengthy treatment and possibly avoid surgical procedures in the future.
