What is the advantage of two-phase orthodontic treatment?
Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized approach that combines tooth alignment, bite correction, and facial growth guidance. The goal is to create a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile. By addressing jaw development and alignment early in select cases, we can help ensure the best possible long-term results for your child.
What if treatment is put off?
Delaying treatment can lead to more complex and invasive procedures later in life. Early orthodontic care allows us to correct growth and bite problems while the jaw is still developing—making treatment more effective and comfortable, and helping your child achieve lasting results.
Phase One
A Foundation for a Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles
The goal of Phase One treatment is to guide jaw growth so that all permanent teeth can erupt properly and the upper and lower jaws fit together harmoniously. Children may show early signs of jaw growth issues, such as an upper jaw that’s too narrow or growing too much. Kids over age six with these concerns may benefit from early orthodontic evaluation. Likewise, children around age eight with crowded front teeth can often avoid future extractions through timely early treatment.
- Planning now can save your child's smile later
Children benefit tremendously from early treatment. It may prevent the removal of permanent teeth later in life or the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaws.
- Individualized planning
During your child’s initial consultation, the doctor will determine if early treatment is necessary. We’ll take orthodontic records—including digital models, X-rays, and photographs—to create a personalized treatment plan. These records help us determine the best type of appliances, estimated treatment time, and frequency of visits.
Resting Period
After Phase One, we allow the remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. During this resting period, retaining devices may or may not be used, depending on your child’s needs. A successful first phase creates enough space for permanent teeth to erupt properly. If not, they may become impacted or displaced.
- Monitoring growth and development
We’ll schedule observation visits every 6 to 12 months to monitor your child’s dental development and make selective adjustments—such as removing certain baby teeth if needed to guide eruption.
Phase Two
Complete Correction and Optimization of the Smile
Phase Two begins once all or most permanent teeth have erupted. By this point, the jaw and teeth are ready for fine-tuning—establishing harmony between the lips, cheeks, tongue, and teeth for optimal function and aesthetics. The goal is to ensure every tooth is positioned correctly for proper function and facial balance. This phase usually involves full upper and lower braces for an average of 18–24 months. After braces are removed, your child will wear retainers to maintain their beautiful new smile and ensure long-term stability.
